Precision engineered, lightweight and easy to install – these are just some of the reasons why Latvian company CMB Group use MiTek’s Posi-Joist beams in their construction projects
Delivering innovative, energy efficient and sustainable buildings is the main goal for Latvian design and construction company CMB Group. And finding modern methods of construction that help them deliver these goals is something the company strives to do. We spoke to Artis Dzirkalis, CMB group leader and Imants Trezuns, CMB Housing factory director, to find out how MiTek’s Posi-Joist is one such solution that’s helping them to build better, smarter and faster.
The benefits of Posi-Joist
Founded in 2005, the CMB Group prides itself on being able to deliver the entire construction process to clients. To be able to do this, the Group is divided into several companies that each have their own specialism. CMB Housing Solution, which focuses on designing and building prefabricated timber houses, is one of them.
A year ago, CMB Housing Solution opened a new factory to start producing timber houses. Keen to establish best practices and solutions from the start, the team wanted to choose products that afforded high standards of engineering. Having chosen to manufacture MiTek connector trusses in the factory, they were then introduced to MiTek’s Posi-Joists, prefabricated metal strut covered beams, and were sold on the benefits manufacturing the product themselves could bring.
Artis Dzirkalis explains how the product helps them build better and faster: “For us, there are so many benefits from using Posi-Joist. It’s very lightweight and easy to assemble, there is plenty of free space to accommodate various types of utilities perpendicular to the direction of the beams and it has good acoustic properties because the thermal and acoustic insulation material is already incorporated. But I think one of the main benefits for us is that these beams can be over six metres long, which is impossible to achieve in practice with conventional wooden beams.”
Precise engineering with design software
Designing smarter is also an area CMB are focused on getting right. MiTek’s PAMIR design software enables them to manufacture Posi-Joists with precision, as Artis explains: “The PAMIR design software supports the production of timber beams already integrated into the specific building projects. But it can be used further in the factory, for example in detailing. It gives us the exact elements that we can give to the team who can then implement and prepare Posi-Joists precisely.”
Imants Trezuns agrees: “These constructions are very, very precise. There’s no risk of developing any bulges or bends that would make it difficult to alter. And we don’t need heavy machinery to build the structure either. We put the Posi-Joists in position and then the team can place the elements one after the other.”
Going one step further, CMB have undergone an accreditation process for production and, in collaboration with MiTek, have also accredited the production of Posi-Joist beams, which means the product meets all the required parameters.
“CMB clearly sees the potential for using Posi-Joist beams, not only in panel technology but also in modular technology too,” says Imants.
