How do you restore and adapt a 17th century building to meet modern living standards?

Our colleagues in MiTek Sweden have been working on an exciting new project, that uses Posi-Joist to meet high acoustic demands, contributing to an incredible restoration project in the Swiss town of Cressier.

Speaking to architect Laurent Demarta, we explore how Posi-Joist has been used to rebuild a building destroyed by fire. With only its four walls left standing, this project was quite an undertaking!

A specialist in restoring and renovating old buildings, Laurent Demarta comments:

“Our client used to live in the house and rented out parts of it. Sound insulation was virtually non existent, and you could hear everything from one floor to another. The post-fire renovation provided an opportunity to introduce modern sound insulation between the floors, which was one of the main requirements for the client.” It’s worth noting that the client is also an expert in acoustics and sound insulation, so a high standard was expected.

The stone building was completely empty after the fire, leaving all four walls at risk of collapse without the required support. One of the main challenges was working out how to integrate modern floors with the existing stone walls. The new floors were designed with Posi-Joist to help connect different parts of the building. Constructing floors to support 300-year -old stone walls is complex, but MiTek’s Posi-Joist flooring proved to be the ideal solution.
